I live and work in Istanbul, and I am often asked one question: “Is this clinic safe?” Turkey has excellent hospitals and highly trained specialists. It also has a very competitive market, where marketing is sometimes stronger than medicine. Here is the order in which I check a clinic.
1. Is it a licensed medical facility? Every hospital, medical center and clinic in Turkey must be licensed by the Ministry of Health. A surgery should take place in a licensed hospital or surgical center with an operating room, anesthesia team and intensive care access — not in a converted office.
2. Is it authorized to treat international patients? Turkey has a separate authorization for facilities and intermediaries working in international health tourism. Ask the clinic, or the agency you are speaking with, whether they hold it. A legitimate organization will answer without hesitation.
3. Who exactly will treat me? I want the full name of the doctor, their specialty and where they trained. Then I check that the specialty matches the procedure. A hair transplant, a rhinoplasty and a dental implant each need a different specialist. Ask directly whether the doctor performs the key part of the procedure personally, or whether technicians do it.
4. Is there a real consultation? Before travel, you should have a consultation with the treating doctor, at least online, and a written treatment plan. A price list sent by a sales manager is not a consultation.
5. Is accreditation a bonus, not the only criterion? International accreditations such as JCI are a good sign for hospitals. Many good smaller clinics do not have them. Accreditation helps, but it does not replace checking the doctor and the facility.
6. What happens if something goes wrong? Ask how complications are managed, who you contact after you return home, and whether you will receive a detailed medical report in English.
None of these questions are rude. A good clinic expects them.
